SWARNAM SCHOOL OF MUSIC

"Everyone can Sing"

SSM classes are conducted in both online and offline modes. Offline classes are usually held on Sunday evenings at the Centre for Cultural Research and Training, Kondapur, Hyderabad.

The School

Swarnam School of Music is a premier institution Based in Hyderabad, India. SSM brings the esteemed Guru-Shishya Parampara into the age of digital education. It prides itself in retaining the traditional format of learning Carnatic music with focus on singing technique and building strong foundations.

The school aims to teach classical Carnatic Music beyond the few hours of classroom interaction. Inspired by the Kalakshethra system, the school follows traditional methods of teaching and encourages the study of music as a wholesome subject, rather than just notation and song learning. The Syllabus is Alligned with the certificate course content of the P.S Telugu University.

Guru Shishya Parampara

Carnatic Music has its roots deep in ancient Indian culture. Aspects of carnatic music are found in ancient texts like the Natyashastra and Silappadhikaram. The earliest temple sculptures across south India carry depictions of musical instruments like veena, mridangam and flute. Historical and current geographies including Vijayanagaram, Tanjavoor, Travancore, are rich with stories of music valour.

In olden times teaching carnatic music and other fine arts occurred through the Guru-Shishya Parampara format of learning. The student stayed at the residence of the guru and learning was an imbibed activity during the course of the days’ chores.

In the modern world, the teaching and learning of this rich art form has been reduced to a mere one/two hour activity per week. The boundaries of the subject too are limited to learning only the musical notes and no attempt is being made to pass on the contextual knowledge. Attempting to learn all about this sacred form of art in a few hours is definitely a challenge.

Our Testimonials

"With this March 10th, I have completed one year in this school. As soon as I joined, lockdown happened and I was very skeptical initially about how the virtual learning was going to be but I am so glad that I put aside that doubt and continued the class. The way the teachers and admins managed a perfect schedule was amazing. The teacher makes us to feel that we are part of a family than a school. That's what I like the most about this school. P. S. I was 27 when I joined the school. So it is not too late to start your Carnatic music learning and all of us are welcomed in this school :)"

"I completed my 6 months as of this week. 5 stars does no justice as this school deserves 1000 stars and then few more and than another few! Preeti Ma’am and Ahobalagaru ma’am are simply amazing and so knowledgeable! Even during the covid time, we have online classes every week and not a single scheduled class has been cancelled. Other than the usual classes, there are extra theory classes, vocal exercise sessions, innumerable videos shared by Preeti Ma’am to clear our basics. Teachers go above and beyond to ensure we truely learn singing, the theory and the history beyond it, just like a mother teaches their children, with exact same passion and nothing less. I am a Bengali learning carnatic music and love it, it just proves how great the teachers are! I will recommend this to anyone who wants to learn music!"

"Anyone can sing" is what my Guru ( Preethi mam) believes and she's proving that in this school. I joined the school as a beginner to learn Carnatic music 5 months ago. Everyone here is really helpful and positive. We have students from different countries and always have the freedom to talk to teachers regarding timings or any other queries and they are just a call away from us. The explanation for the background of swarasthanas or thalams or for the other music theory is understandable. Breathing exercises and practice sessions are very beneficial for every student. Thanks to my Gurus Preethi mam, Ahobala garu And seethamma garu for your wonderful guidance and teaching us. I would suggest to join our school if someone is really interested to learn Carnatic music.

One from the vantage point of someone who started learning Carnatic music at the age of 28. My voice was all rustic and crude when I joined. Thanks to Preeti ma'am, I can see great difference and progress in my voice modulation and control. She brings so much confidence that you will start believing that you can also do wonders in singing. The best teacher you can get!

Avanthika Buddhi

My teacher makes sure it’s not just a learning but an enriching experience. I think her and the music started making a difference in the way I perceive life. I couldn’t ask for a better school.

I was impressed with the way the teacher handles students at different levels of expertise, especially with how she onboards freshers. Restarting my Carnatic classes after a year, I was put thru the basics for two months again, where I gained deep insights on each chapter. This simple mantra of getting the basics strong helped putting me in a better position than before. Things which I feel unique compared to trivial music schools : - In-depth learning. - Individual attention. - I can bet the theory classes here are A1.

I joined here to rekindle my lost passion for music(which i learnt in my childhood), and i must say, as a music enthusiast, my learning slope never dipped a day. And my mam, make sures it stays that way. The techniques and insights (especially her quick and witty adaptability for her students, be it a beginner/novice who starts afresh or someone learning advanced lessons) that she handles for each person is simply mind-blowing. Moreover the homely feel/atmosphere here surely makes learning music a divine experience. I am proud to say, my guru, Mrs.Preethi garu, is surely an awesome teacher who comes once in a lifetime!!.

Love each lesson at SSM because of the Guru (Preeti garu) and the students that assemble there. The bonding that happens among the students from various backgrounds and age groups at SSM is a wonderful experience to feel and cherish. All credit goes to the Guru. I started taking Carnatic music lessons at the age of 52 and I feel enriched each session. What I liked the most in the Guru is that she encourages everyone irrespective of their basic talent (when they start) in grasping and learning music or merits/demerits of their vocals. The slogan here is "Everyone and Anyone can learn and enjoy Music", and that's such a positive world created here and I wish the School to grow and grow....into an Institution itself!!

Very nice! It’s assuring to have such an expert like Ms Preethi teach my children music. We Woking mothers, even though we dream that our children learn Carnatic music, most of times it’s finding the right teacher that create the hurdle to pursue the dream!
